Excel charts

A real Excel chart from one prompt

Say what you want charted. builds the table and a native, editable Excel chart inside your own workbook, and hands the same file back.

It reads the numbers from your sheets, or from a PDF, lays them out as a table with formulas and draws the chart in Excel itself: column, line, bar or pie. Ask again to add a series, fix a legend or change the colours. Formulas, formats and your other sheets are left as they were.

  • A real Excel chart, not a pictureColumn, line, bar or pie, drawn by Excel itself and linked to a table in your workbook. Click it and the design tabs open as usual.
  • The table comes with itThe numbers are read from your sheets, or from a PDF, and laid out as a table with formulas. The chart follows the table.
  • One chart you keep shaping"Add a second line", "fix the legend", "make it navy": the next message edits the same chart in the same file.

01 · A BANK ANALYST, AN 8-PAGE PDF

put five PDF tables into Excel and drew the segment chart

The analyst

Attached is JPMorganChase's 2Q26 earnings release. Please build me an Excel workbook from the results tables on pages 2-5: 1. One sheet called "Results" with a block for each table: Firm (page 2), CCB (page 3), CIB (page 4), AWM (page 4) and Corporate (page 5). 2. In each block keep the rows Net revenue, Noninterest expense, Provision for credit losses and Net income. For the Firm keep both 'Net revenue - reported' and 'Net revenue - managed'. 3. Columns 2Q26, 1Q26 and 2Q25 in $ millions. Leave out the release's own O/(U) columns. 4. Bracketed figures like (24) are negatives and must be stored as numbers, not text. 5. Add my own YoY % column (2Q26 vs 2Q25) as an Excel formula, so I can tie it to the release. 6. Add a clustered bar chart of 2Q26 vs 2Q25 net revenue for CCB, CIB, AWM and Corporate.

  1. Read the tables on pages 2 to 5 and typed nothing by hand

A new workbook with one "Results" sheet and one block per table. Every figure is stored as a number, brackets such as (24) become -24, and the YoY column is a formula on every row. Green numbers are formulas; click one to see it.

02 · A MATHS COACH, A 7-SHEET WORKBOOK

added a trend sheet and a line chart, then a second line on request

The coach

I need a chart for Monday's data meeting from this NYC results workbook. Use the sheet 'Math - All' and only the rows where District = 01 and Grade = All Grades (one row per year: 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026). 1. Add a new sheet called 'D01 Trend'. 2. On it, put a small table with columns Year, Number Tested and % Level 3+4 (one decimal), oldest year first. 3. Next to the table, add a line chart of % Level 3+4 by year. 4. Under the table, add a one-line note that 2020 and 2021 have no data and that results from 2022 and earlier aren't directly comparable with 2023 onwards (the NOTES sheet explains this). Don't change anything on the existing seven sheets.

  1. Found the seven District 01 rows and charted them on a new sheet

A "D01 Trend" sheet with the small table, oldest year first, and a native line chart beside it. No point is drawn for 2020 or 2021, which have no data. The seven original sheets are identical to the upload, cell for cell.

  2. Second message: the English-learner line went onto the same chart

    The coach

Now add English Language Learners to the same chart. 1. From the sheet 'Math - ELL', take the rows where District = 01, Grade = All Grades and Category = Current ELL, and add their % Level 3+4 as a new column 'Current ELL % Level 3+4' in the 'D01 Trend' table (same years). 2. Add it as a second line on the existing chart, with a legend showing 'District 01 (all students)' and 'Current ELL'. 3. Put a cell comment on the 2023 row of the table explaining that the drop/jump there is because the 2023 tests were aligned to new standards, so earlier years aren't directly comparable. Keep the first series as it is.

The Current ELL column was added to the table and as a second series on the existing chart; the first line is unchanged, and the 2023 row carries the comment. The legend kept the column headings instead of the names asked for, and the reply said so.

03 · AN AUDITOR, 3,161 PAYMENTS

built a Summary sheet of formulas and a bar chart of spend by area

The auditor

The Summary sheet is missing. Please add it to this workbook as I asked: total spend by Service Delivery Area (largest first), the top 10 suppliers with their number of transactions, and a bar chart of spend by area. Use formulas where you can.

This was the second message of the conversation: the first request had asked for the same summary and wrote it to a separate CSV instead. One sentence put it where it belonged.

  1. Added a Summary sheet with the 11 areas, largest first

Each total is a SUMIF over the data sheet, with a grand total under them, then the top ten suppliers by spend with a COUNTIF transaction count. Green numbers are formulas.

What you can ask for

Charts, and the work around them

CHART

Column, line, bar or pie

Inserted as a native Excel chart with a title, axes and legend, reading a table in the workbook. Open it in Excel and edit it like any other chart.

FROM A PDF

Numbers that start in a PDF

Tables in an earnings release, a report or a scan are read into cells first, as numbers. Brackets become negatives. Then the chart is drawn from them.

FOLLOW-UP

Change it in the next message

Add a second series, rename the legend, switch to a line, move it to its own sheet or restyle it in your house colours. The same chart is edited, not redrawn from scratch.

SUMMARISE

A summary table to chart from

Totals by area, month or supplier on a new sheet, built with SUMIF and COUNTIF formulas you can trace back to the rows.

FILTER & SORT

Tidy the data first

AutoFilters, multi-key sorts, trimmed names and split date columns, applied the way Excel does it, so no row is lost.

ZERO LOSS

Everything else stays put

Formulas, number formats, other sheets and every cell you did not ask to change are left exactly as they were. Up to 100MB per workbook.

FAQ

Common questions

Is the chart a real Excel chart or an image?

A real one. It is written into the workbook as a native chart object linked to a table, so Excel's Chart Design and Format tabs work on it, and it updates when the table changes.

Can it chart numbers that are only in a PDF?

Yes. The tables are read from the PDF into cells first, stored as numbers, and the chart is drawn from those cells. The earnings-release example above started as an 8-page PDF.

Will my formulas and formatting survive?

Yes. edits the workbook in place, so formulas, number formats, other sheets and every cell it was not asked to change stay as they were. Filters hide rows rather than deleting them.

What if the chart is not quite right?

Say so in the next message: a legend name, a missing series, a colour. The same chart is edited in the same file. When something could not be done as asked, the reply says so rather than hiding it.

Which spreadsheet files can I upload?

Excel workbooks (.xlsx and .xls) and CSV files, and PDFs when the numbers live there. Paid plans handle files up to 100MB.

Can I keep client data private?

Yes. Switch your account to Zero Data Retention and your files only go to AI providers that keep none of your data after answering. You also choose how long chats and files are kept.
